New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the West Bengal government to give Rs 5 lakh as compensation in addition to the already sanctioned Rs 50,000 to the survivor of the Birbhum gangrape.
The court also hit out at the West Bengal government saying it failed to protect the fundamental right of the gangrape victim. The court also said that all states are duty-bound to protect the right of women. The court has observed that women have the freedom of choice in marriage.
A 20-year-old woman was gangraped in Birbhum district in January allegedly on the orders of a panchayat. She was subjected to the torture for allegedly falling in love with a man outside her community. On failing to pay a fine, she was gang raped on the panchayat's orders.
The police had arrested 13 people including head of the Panchayat in the case. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered the removal of Birbhum SP C Sudhakar over the incident.
