BANGALORE: If stinking streets and littered roads glare at you while walking, here is some good news for commuters. Bangalore University has taken a social initiative to create awareness and maintain hygiene in the city. The university is going to celebrate ‘Bangalore Civic Sense Day’ on September 22.In an open letter to the BBMP and Bangalore Police Commissioners, BU Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhudev, stated that civic sense has dropped to an all time low in recent years in the city. “There are spit marks, urine stench, vulgar graffiti, garbage spills at every nook and corner of Bangalore. It is convenient to point at the government, but people must first question themselves and their civic sense,” the letter noted. He also mentioned that students are taught about civic sense, they also learn civic responsibility. Students have to be taught civic sense because unlike a special skill, civic sense is a school of thought itself.Dr Prabhudev said that BU along with Janagraha is launching the campaign. “Around 600 colleges are affiliated to BU. We are asking every college management to send 10 interested students along with senior faculty member to take part in the campaign,” he said. BU along with Janagraha will organise a training programme for these students and faculty members, who will train other students in their respective colleges. These students will carry out the public awareness programme in and around their college premises. Dr Prabhudev also said that they will also conduct poster campaigns, slogan and essay competitions involving students. “We are approaching private FM radio stations and requesting Radio Jockeys to announce and discuss the same in their shows. This will bring public awareness,” he added.Interested candidates can write to [email protected]
