New Delhi: US President George W Bush has proposed a Budget of nearly $3 trillion for 2008. He also plans to raise military spending by a record $700 billion – much of it for the Iraq war.
If Congress approves the war-funding request, the US would have spent more than $650 billion on military operations Iraq and Afghanistan.
The President has come under fierce criticism for his proposals it cuts down on welfare schemes such as health, education and public transport.
The foreign assistance allocation comes under the State Department's total budget of about $36 billion and an additional $10 billion plus has been earmarked for the Department's foreign operations, an increase of over five per cent from the Fiscal 2007 levels.
PTI quoted a senior State Department official saying that a country like India will see a small cut in programmes for the reason that the country has been posting strong economic performance and has itself become a "donor" country.
Statistics on the Fiscal 2008 Budget as it pertained to foreign assistance allocations of the State Department show that Israel and Egypt still rank first and second. Israel is 2.4 billion, Egypt is 1.721 billion.
