BANGALORE: Caritas India, the social action wing of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, commemorated 50 years of its service to the poor and the marginalised on Wednesday.Inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations, Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayath Raj, Dr Shalini Rajaneesh called upon Caritas India to consider more collaboration with the government on social auditing and improvement of governance system at the panchayat level to ensure legitimate rights of the people.Applauding their effort, she said, “Time bound approach is necessary to eradicate poverty. In this effort, the voluntary organisations are the gap-fillers with the effort of government and bureaucracy to know the facilities and make it available to the needy.In this, the 3D approach— democracy, decentralization and development — should go together and ensure good governance.” To mark the occasionm, a two-day workshop- “Rights Based Approach for the Integral Development of the Society through Better Governance” started on Wednesday at St John’s Medical College auditorium.Around 110 delegates from across the state participated. Bishop Peter Remigius, Chairman, Caritas India, Fr Fredrick D’Souza, Executive Director,Caritas India, Mar Giorgies, Bishop of Puttur, Derek Fernandes, Bishop of Karwar, and Archbishop of Bangalore Rev Bernard Moras were among other dignitaries present.
