The police have registered a case against the management of Marine College of Technology on charges of cheating students who were inducted to marine courses that had no approval from the Director-General of Shipping.
The police arrested Mohan Kumar, the managing director of the institution and released him on bail after the management agreed to return the collected fees during a meeting held in the presence of the District Collector on Tuesday.
Sub-inspector of South Police Station, G Ananthlal said that the college had been providing marine courses that had no approval from the Director-General(DG) of Shipping.
The Kerala High Court had made it mandatory last week that all the marine courses should have the approval from the Director-General.
After the order, several parents had asked the management to return the fees remitted by their wards, a request that fell on deaf ears. Later, complaints against the management was registered with the police from different parts of the city.
On the basis of the complaints, the police demanded for compromise talks. In the presence of District Collector Sheik Pareeth the management agreed to return the fees collected from the students.
The full fees will be returned to the students of the recently admitted batch. The students who have completed six months of training will be given 80 per cent of the fees, whereas 30 per cent of the course fee would be paid to the students who have completed one year and have written the final semester examination.
The fees will be returned to the students before December 15.
SI G Ananthalal said that more people involved in the case would be arrested soon.
