A man from Uttar Pradesh’s Bara Barabanki allegedly killed his wife over suspicion of infidelity and walked to a nearby police station with the woman’s severed head in one hand and a sickle in another before getting arrested. A video of the incident is being widely shared on social media.
The scene played out on the streets Basara village under the jurisdiction of Fatehpur Police Station. According to sources, a man identified as Kumar Kanaujiya, a daily-wage labourer, killed his wife, Vandana, over suspicion of an affair using a sickle and walked out with the severed head.
Police said the couple had gotten married eight years ago and had a four-year-old son.
According to sources, the accused’s wife, Vandana, was dating another man, which led to frequent disputes in the house.
As the tensions escalated over the past few days, and the matter reached the police, who worked out a solution, counselled the couple and sent them home.
On Friday morning, Anil left the house for work but returned shortly and attacked his wife fatally, beheading her with the sickle.
Locals alerted the police, who arrested the accused while he was walking to the police station.
Barabanki Superintendent of Police (SP) Dinesh Kumar Singh said the accused was arrested with the severed head of his wife and the murder weapon.
“Anil suspected his wife’s illicit relationship and confronted her about it. Fuelled by anger, he carried out this heinous act. The police are registering a case and conducting a thorough investigation. Stringent legal action will be taken against the accused after a comprehensive inquiry into the entire incident,” he said.
Bengal man parades with wife’s severed head
A similar incident has been reported from West Bengal. According to an NDTV report, 40-year-old Goutam Guchhait, was arrested after he beheaded his wife and walked around on the streets with her severed head. The incident took place in Purba Medinipur district and was filmed by locals.
The man’s family had, in 2021, claimed he was mentally unstable after he jumped into a lion’s enclosure at the Alipore Zoo in Kolkata.
