CBI seeks return of revolvers from officers

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has approached the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court seeking a directive to suspended CBI officials S Unnikrishnan Nair and K K Rajan, to return the revolvers granted to them during the investigation in the Sampath custodial death case.

The Kerala High Court had earlier directed the authorities to provide CRPF protection and a revolver for security to the investigating officers, in the wake of threats received by them, in connection with the case. The CBI submitted that investigation in the Sampath case is over and the supplementary chargesheet will be submitted before the court.

The two officials were not part of the investigating team headed by CBI ASP Jaikumar. Since the officials are now under suspension and are no longer part of the investigation team, they should be directed to return the revolvers, the CBI submitted.

However, the two officials have submitted before the court that considering the controversies in connection with the Sampath case, and for security reasons, it is not feasible for them to return the revolvers. The Magistrate adjourned the hearing of the case to October 8.
