Chennai is experiencing a significant increase in vegetable prices as heavy rain warnings prompt residents to stockpile essential items. The Chennai Meteorological Department has reported a low-pressure area over the South-East Bay of Bengal, leading to anticipated rain across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next five days.
In response to the forecast, shoppers flocked to vegetable markets throughout Chennai, particularly in areas like D Nagar, Thambaram, Koyambedu, and Velachery, resulting in a rush to purchase vegetables. Many essential items, including tomatoes, milk, and bread, were sold out in various locations.
The impact of the heavy rain warning is evident in the sharp price increases. Tomato prices soared by Rs 40 in just one day, with current prices ranging from Rs 80 to Rs 120 at the Koyambedu wholesale market, up from Rs 50 to Rs 80. Onions are selling between Rs 40 and Rs 60, while carrots range from Rs 60 to Rs 70. Interestingly, potato prices have seen a slight decline, dropping by Rs 14 to a range of Rs 30 to Rs 36.
As the rain continues, consumers are urged to stay informed and plan accordingly.
