Bilaspur: After the sterilisation tragedy in Bilaspur claimed the lives of 14 women, the Chhattisgarh government has decided to adopt the children of the women who died after the surgeries. The government has assured that it will make fixed deposits of Rs 2 lakh for all the children, fund their education and provide them health care till the age of 18 years.

The decisions were taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Raman Singh at his official residence on Sunday. Each of these children would get a health card, which will enable him or her to avail of services at Apollo Hospital, Bilaspur till the age of 18.

Meanwhile, an official of the Food and Drug Controller Administration has been suspended for issuing a compliance certificate to the firm that supplied the substandard medicines used in the surgeries. The move comes after the state authorities had said that medicines contaminated with zinc phosphide - which is used as rat poison - was used in the drugs which could have led to the deaths.

Raids were also conducted by the state government authorities at the manufacturing unit of company that supplied the medicines where rat poison was found. The company has been banned and samples of the medicine have been sent to Kolkata, Delhi and Nagpur labs for testing. Raids were also conducted in medical shops across the state.

Fourteen women died after undergoing surgeries on November 8 and 10. As many as 122 women are still undergoing treatment at the hospitals.
