Beijing: A Chinese couple has been guarding a fortress on a barren island off the eastern China coast for the past 25 years. The island, which has no fresh water or electricity, is located off Lianyungang coastal city in Jiangsu province, the Yangtse Evening Post reported.
Wang Jicai, 52 and his wife, Wang Shihua, 50, are the only guards at a military fortress on the 13,000-square-metre island.
The couple came to the island in July 1986 and have been in charge of monitoring sea and air, protecting national defence facilities and helping vessels and people in danger.
The island - the size of only two football fields - had no electricity till 2008, when the military department sent a wind power generator.
The husband has been honoured as an "advanced manager of national defence projects" and a "May Day Labour Model" by the country.
