The youth of St Theresa’s Church in Nungambakkam, which is in its centenary year, have decided to take the celebrations up a notch. Century-old hymns will be skipped, leather-bound books with browning pages will be kept aside and it is the hope of the choir STJC (St Theresa’s Junior Choir) that elders and tweens alike will get off their seats, stand up and sing along.
Not the typical inside-of-a-church scene that you imagined? Well, it won’t be. After a month of gruelling rehearsals, STJC is all geared up for the church’s first gospel rock concert on Saturday.
“It’s never been done at St Theresa’s before,” says an excited Jude Liniker, choir leader for the performance. He adds quickly, “I mean, we’ve had Don Moen come down to Chennai and lots of people know Hillsong (Australian gospel band) from TV,” he goes on, “but singing for a ticketed rock show will be a first for us.”
The choir-band will cover popular gospel compositions such as Lord I Lift Your Name on High, Salvation and Every Move I Make.
Asked whether the concert is targeted at the youngsters in the congregation, Jude is adamant that this three-hour gospel marathon is for everybody. “We know that we’ll have the elders, parents and kids. Bring your whole family along!” he smiles with enthusiasm.
In fact, the 21-year-old choir master states, “We’re expecting a minimum of a 1,000 people, because we already have that many tickets sold.”
Well, as far as gospel in Chennai goes – sounds like this concert is going to be the party of the ‘century.’
The concert will be held on September 15 at 6.30pm at St Theresa’s Church, Nungambakkam High Road. For details, contact 9176699049.
