SATTUR: Due to the alertness of the Kanyakumari-Rameswaram Express driver, a major tragedy was averted near Sittraru next to Sattur, after ‘S’ clamps were found to have been placed on the rails early on Monday.When the train was nearing Sittraru at 1.20am, the driver noticed unusual noise and vibration in the rails. He then informed the Sittraru station. Meanwhile, Sattur railway station officials cautioned the driver of the Mumbai-Nagercoil train to proceed very slowly. When the train was nearing Sittraru station, he noticed clamps on the rails and brought the train to a halt around 2 am.When officials at the Sattur station were informed, they proceeded to the spot and found that ten ‘S’ clamps had been removed and placed on the rails. Railway officials from Thoothukudi and Madurai rushed to the spot with sniffer dogs and examined the rails.They noticed blood stains a few feet from the rail track. Railway officials made inquiries if anyone was found injured nearby. Madurai zone Railway Protection Force Commissioner Ramesh has ordered the constitution of a special team to conduct investigation.Inspector General of Police Manjunatha said two special teams have been constituted to apprehend the saboteurs. He, along with Virudhunagar SP Najmal Hoda and railway officials, questioned railway employees here. They showed how the clamps were removed and placed on the rails.Since there were blood stains near the track, the police are probing if any murder had taken place in the vicinity, but no such incident had been reported. The blood samples have been sent for forensic analysis.
