Rich tributes were paid to former chief minister and visionary leader Devaraj Urs on his 97th birth anniversary by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and the Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa here on Monday.
At a state function organised by the Department of the Backward Classes Welfare Department on the premises of Vidhana Soudha, Shettar described the late Urs as the champion of oppressed classes.
Shettar said that the state had progressed thanks to the revolutionary steps taken by the late chief minister.
Renaming the state from Mysore State to Karnataka, implementation of Backward Classes Committee Report of Havanur and providing separate reservations and banning carrying of night soil on the heads of backward classes were some of the several achievements of late Devaraj Urs
