HYDERABAD: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has directed the power utilities to gear up for increase in power demand for rabi and the upcoming summer. While reviewing the power supply position with officials, the chief minister said the main objective should be to supply reliable and adequate power to all consumers and priority be given for sevenhour supply to agriculture sector. He directed officials to take steps like running power plants at optimum level, maintaining adequate coal stocks and procurement of additional power from outside, to ensure proper supply. He also directed officials to maintain sufficient stock of distribution transformers.
Officials informed Kiran Kumar Reddy that the present power supply position was satisfactory. While the demand was 250 MU per day, the Discoms were able to meet around 243 MU, with a gap of around 7 MU. The gap between demand and supply was three per cent in the state, while it was around 48 MU (20 per cent) in Tamil Nadu and 18 MU (10 per cent) in Karnataka, officials added. The chief minister also enquired about procurement of additional 1,100 MW for February to May and getting 231 MW from NTPC Jhajjar station in Haryana till May.Reacting to the generation of only 52 per cent power due to reduction of gas supply by Reliance's gas plants, the chief minister said he would write a letter to Union petroleum minister S Jaipal Reddy for increased supply of gas. Kiran Reddy also directed officials to coordinate with NTPC officials for early commercial operations of NTPC's 500 MW Simhadri unitII.
