VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian Coast Guard personnel on Sunday rescued a 7-member crew of a fishing boat of Visakhaptnam fishing harbour which had drifted to Paradip in Odisha due to mechanical failure.  The mechanised boat, Kumarandrapur, had ventured into the sea for fishing 10 days ago along with the necessary ration. On June 24, the boat's gearbox broke down and 7-member crew were stranded in deep sea. However, they managed to inform the Andhra Pradesh Mechanised Fishing Boat Association about their problem seeking immediate help. The association then requested the Indian Coast Guard to rescue the fishermen of the boat which was drifting towards north of Paradip port.In response, the Coast Guard alerted all its vessels on sea and directed them to trace the boat. Coast Guard vessel Sarojini Naidu carried out extensive search and located the fishing boat at 6.10 pm on Saturday. The Coast Guard officials informed the owner of the boat about safety of the crew and started rescue operation. The technical team of the Coast Guard ship boarded the stranded vessel and tried to repair its gearbox. But, they failed to repair it as the gear box had totally broken down and no spare part was available in the boat. The Coast Guard ship then towed the boat to Paradip and handed it over to the fisheries department there.
