Srinagar: Colonel Munindra Nath Rai's batchmate and close friend Colonel Amit Aul remembers him as a brave and daring soldier. "He was a great colleague, we underwent training together and he volunteered to join the Gorkha Regiment. Then we both were given the command of two battalions of Rashtriya Rifles. He was a fine commanding officer. I always envied him that he took his regiment to newer heights."
Speaking about the Col Rai, GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen Subrata Saha said, "MN Rai's quick thinking, retaliation led to the death of terrorists in Tral. Had it not been for him there would have been casualties."
Col Rai, the commanding officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles, will be cremated in New Delhi on Thursday after he was martyred along one policeman in an encounter with Hijbul Mujahideen terrorists in Tral area of Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening.
The slain officer was awarded the Yudh Seva medal just a day earlier on the 66th Republic Day.
