CHENNAI: Speakers at a meeting organised in connection with the centenary year celebrations of former Vice Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, Mu Varadarasanar, lauded the contributions of the noted scholar to Tamil literature. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Prof R Gnanamoorthy, Director, Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chennai, said that Mu Va, as the great Tamil scholar is fondly called, has penned 85 books on a wide range of subjects ranging from linguistics to travelogue to children’s literature, in which he had christened all his characters with Tamil names. “In a bid to emphasise that Tamils should christen their wards with Tamil names, Mu Va christened his own children with Tamil names,” he underlined. Detailing about Mu Va’s books, he said, the tall personality, who headed the department of Tamil at the University of Madras, attracted the 20th century youth towards Tamil literature through his writings. We are happy to host the centenary year celebrations of Mu Va, he added. In his address, E Sundaramoorthy, former Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, stated that Mu Va began with a humble career as a clerk and occupied the seat of the Vice Chancellor due to his hard work and contributions to the language. Describing about teacher-student relationship, he said that Mu Va was one of the finest lecturers, who took utmost care for the welfare of the student community.
