New Delhi: A notorious gangster, who escaped during an encounter with police early this year, was arrested in the National Capital along with his accomplice after a brief shootout, police said on Saturday.
Kamaljeet, who escaped during the Green Park encounter on January 19, was caught along with Shakeel on Friday, they said.
The 36-year-old gangster, a close aide of Satte and Sharafat Sheikh, was wanted in more than 40 cases of robberies in banks and cash vans in Delhi, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan.
Kamaljeet alias Bittoo, who became the kingpin of infamous Satte gang after Satte's arrest, was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 declared by Delhi Police and Rs 10,000 by the UP Police.
The police have recovered an Italian .32 bore pistol loaded with 9 cartridges from his possession and a Chinese pistol with two fired and three live cartridges from the possession of Shakeel.
With these arrests, police claimed to have foiled the plan of the criminals to loot a cash van in South Delhi area.
"During interrogation, Kamaljeet told us about his plan to loot a cash van in South Delhi. On his instance, the team after a brief encounter arrested Shakeel, another gangster and the brother-in-law of Satte, near Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium," a senior police official said.
