BANGALORE: Corporators were united in blaming the city police for their inability to prevent the grim murder of Gandhinagar Corporator S Nataraj on Saturday morning. Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)officials too believed that the incident highlighted the lack of security in the city and the complete failure on the part of the city’s police forces. Condemning the incident, Deputy Mayor S Harish said that personal security for officials has become a necessity following repeated incidents of blackmailing by the ‘mafia’ in the city. “I strongly believe that the perpetrators of this crime should be shot at sight,” he added. The Opposition leaders in the Palike, however, also blamed the State Government for lack of security in the State. “Two Corporators and one former corporator have been murdered. Clearly, the government and the ruling party in BBMP are doing nothing to protect the elected representatives, leave alone the citizens,” said JD(S) leader Padmanabha Reddy. Opposition leader M Udayashankar said that despite repeated requests to increase security cover in areas surrounding the City Railway Station and the Kempegowda Bus Stand, where there were reports of vandalism, nothing has been done. “The police have failed. Earlier MLA Dinesh Gundu Rao too had asked for increased security in these areas for the same reasons. But, nothing has been done”, he said.Shocked by the news of the murder, Mayor Sharadamma and her Deputy S Harish said that they will convene a meeting of the Council to discuss the issue of security for elected representatives.Meanwhile, the police have stepped up the investigation. Was it a political rivalry or an old enmity or a financial dispute that led to the murder of Corporator Nataraj? These were the questions explored by the police in search of an answer to crack the murder case. Primary suspicion was on enmity fostered by a financial dispute. Political rivalry could be another reason for murder, they said.
