In Bumm Bumm Bole, you play the role of Khogiram. Tell us something about the character.
The film is about a family and Khogi is the head of the family. Khogiram ensures that his kids study in a good school because he was deprived of that opportunity. He wants to give them all the comforts and luxury of life. He is extremely protective but at the same time he also wants kids to get exposed to the outside world. The film also highlights his struggle when he loses his job.
Apparently, this film is adapted from Israel film Children of Heaven. Do you think the remake of a foreign film will work with the home audience?
Yes definitely. I have no problems if it's an adaptation. Bharat Muni, who wrote Natyashastra said that in this world there are only 17 stories. So the stories in all the films, they are somewhat a combination of these 17 stories. So, even if a film is a remake, there is no problem for me at all. How one tells the story is important in a film. Bumm Bumm Bole maybe an adaptation but many new things have been added to it.
The film sees you residing in a terrorist dominated region. Does it have any significance to the plot?
Yes, the place where the family is staying, terrorist activities are active. I mean, even in Mumbai, we live in fear of terrorist attacks. In the film, these factors mould the life of the family members and how they change eventually.
This is your second film with Rituparna Sengupta after Gauri – The Unborn. Do you think of late audiences have been more open to experimenting with scripts and pairing?
According to me, there are only two categories of films, good and bad films. Change is always welcome. The kind of films which are being made today, seemed improbable few years ago. Producers were scared to invest. Now, not only the viewers are open to exploring new things, the producers are ready to take the risk as well.
How were the kids Darsheel and Ziyah on the sets?
Honestly, these kids are very experienced and are very smart. At their age, it is really appreciative that they have so much of confidence. Obviously, today they have more exposure which enables them to learn faster. Darsheel obviously has had a great start to his career. Ziyah has also done many ads. There was never any problem on the sets. They seemed very professional for their age.
How is Priyadarshan as a taskmaster?
This was the first time I got an opportunity to work with him. I learnt so much from him. I think he is the fastest director I have ever worked with. Even before he goes on floors, he has already edited the film in his head. Technically, he is very strong. That man has made so many films. Day in and day out he says action and cut. But it is quite fascinating to see at the speed he works.
What should the audience expect from Bumm Bumm Bole?
Bumm Bumm Bole is a family entertainer, though targettet at the kids. Also, it is an emotional film and every father would be able to connect with it. It is a kind of film you might not get to see everyday. It has lot of simplicity and is also intellectual at the same time.
