New Delhi: As the country witnesses a burgeoning air traffic, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has been handling the maximum number of flight movements daily followed by Mumbai's CST Airport.

While the airport in New Delhi handled an average of 741 flights each day between April and December last year, Mumbai's CST Airport handled 695 flights, official figures have showed.

The flights include international, domestic and those of the general aviation or private charters.

Of the total of 741 flights, the IGI Airport handled 200 international ones and 386 domestic, while its Mumbai counterpart had 187 international and 473 domestic flight movements each day.

During the same period, the airports at Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Hyderabad respectively handled an average of 316, 304, 259 and 227 total flights on a daily basis.

The airports at Cochin and Ahmedabad handled a total of 112 and 106 flights, while Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram had an average of 86 and 70 flight movements, with Nagpur and Goa following closely with 66 each.

While the IGI Airport has the benefit of three runways, aircraft procedures here have been designed for their multiple use to avoid congestion and delays to aircraft, Airports Authority of India (AAI) sources said.

Besides, several sophisticated systems and advanced procedures have been implemented to automate the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system at Delhi, they said.

Among the new technologies introduced in Delhi is a sophisticated advance surface movement guidance and control system, which has also been introduced at airports in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

At Mumbai and Delhi, a system called the Automatic Dependent Surveillance/Controller Pilot Data Link Commission system has been put into operation.

The system, the sources said, enhances the area of surveillance, removes the drawbacks of voice communication and provides direct ATC-pilot communication link beyond the VHF (Very High Frequency) coverage area.

Performance Based Navigation procedures have also been implemented at the airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Chennai, the sources said.

All these measures put together significantly helping in reducing congestion, not only on the air but also on the ground after an aircraft lands and proceeds to the parking bay, they said.
