CHENNAI: In a bid to bridge the digital divide, more than 244 computers with associated peripherals were donated by State Bank of India Cards and Payment Services to NASSCOM Foundation’s Big Bridge programme here on Friday.The computers, which will be refurbished, will support the education work of Literacy India which works with homeless children, the United Way and Nasscom Foundation’s partner non-governmental organisations working on employability and entrepreneurship for lasting change.Speaking on the occasion, Kadambi Narahari, chief executive officer of State Bank of India cards and payment services said they were happy to partner in the noble initiative and this donation will help in taking digital literacy to the underprivileged.Shyamala Ashok of United Way, Chennai, said that the computers will be distributed to the children in juvenile homes besides the students in government schools. NASSCOM regional director K Purushottaman said that Big Bridge enables education employability and entrepreneurship through digital literacy and livelihood projects using refurbished computers.“The vision of the programme is to create a win-win situation of fulfilling both environmental and social objective. This is achieved by extending the life of responsible companies’ computers in a meaningful way and by supporting NGOs,” said Purushottaman, while highlighting NASSCOM’s role in rebuilding Cyclone Thane hit areas.Sanjeev Jain, India leader, GE Volunteers said that it has been supporting NASSCOM foundation’s Big Bridge Programme for past three years and education is a key focus area for GE Volunteers’ activities in India. “This donation will go a long way in supporting and empowering deserving youngsters,” he added.
