Dimapur: In the horrific lynching case of a rape accused in Dimapur, Nagaland Police on Monday submitted a report to the Home Ministry. On March 5, a rape accused was dragged out of Dimapur Central Jail by a mob, stripped, lynched and then hanged from a clock tower.
According to the sources, police claimed that they tried to rescue the victim but were overwhelmed by the mob.
"Police showed restraint as women and children were in crowd. By the time more forces came in, the accused was dead," the sources added.
Even though eight companies of security forces were present, they failed to prevent the mob from carrying out vigilante justice.
Twenty two people have been arrested in connection with the case but the incident has now led to a political tussle between the governments of Assam and Nagaland.
Curfew was relaxed during the day and vehicles were allowed on the roads and shops were open only from 7 AM to 3 PM. Mobile, Internet and SMS services are still suspended in the city as a preventive measure.
The incident is stoking fear among the non-Nagas and the victim's relatives has complained of a lack of security for outsiders in the state.
