Director Vinayan: Smitten by the dracula
According to Vinayan, the audiences can easily relate to the film though it carries the taste of a foreign horror.

There are 21 Hollywood Dracula films made based on the novel written by Bram Stoker in 1897,” begins popular Malayalam director Vinayan. “But in India, no single attempt has been made in this direction. And so, I wanted to make one such a movie in 3D,” he adds. The filmmaker had earlier made a few Tamil films including En Mana Vaanil and Kaasi.

The director, who says he would like to try something different with each film, has visited Rumania, where Dracula is worshipped as god, and is now a repository of information about the same.

According to Vinayan, the audiences can easily relate to the film though it carries the taste of a foreign horror flick. “In the film the story starts with an Indian couple visiting the famous Bran Castle Palace, which is considered as the temple of Dracula in Rumania,” he says.

Titled Naangam Pirai, the film has Telugu actor Sudheer playing the dracula, originally played by Christopher Lee in most of the English versions, and actors Monal Gajjar and Shradda Das play the female leads. “Prabhu plays a psychiatrist settled in Rumania while Nasser is a tantri,” says Vinayan, who plays an important role in the film.

Thirty per cent of the film has been shot and international firms are working on the CG, 3D and sound parts of the film.

“Naangam Pirai will be a complete entertainer with songs and comedy. To cover the budget of the film, we are making it in four languages — Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and English,” says Vinayan.
