MADURAI: In what is termed by medical experts a ‘rare’ phenomenon, especially among villagers, a 46-year-old village woman delivered twin test tube babies, with the help of her 81-year-old husband at a hospital in Madurai on Monday. The babies, according to the doctor, were delivered healthy at the Palani Balaji Fertility Center at D S Hospital in Madurai, after the woman was put on high risk pregnancy care.Perumalsamy (81), of Vengalapatty village, Kodaikanal taluk, married Rathinam (46) as his second wife about 30 years ago as his first wife was childless. After five years, Rathinam gave birth to a son, who died in 2008, in an accident when he was 23 years old.“I was shattered and wanted to eliminate the curse of being without children to take care of us and perform our last rites,” said Perumalsamy. “That was when some of our relatives living in the city suggested the test tube baby method,” he added. “My husband was really desperate to have children and we decided to go ahead with the idea of a test tube baby. But it was surprisingly a smooth and easy process and we have a bonus of one extra child,” said Rathinam full of joy.According to Dr D Senthamarai Selvi, who attended on Rathinam, the babies are in the pink of health and weigh between 2 kgs and 2.5 kgs. During the process, an embryo, fertilised by the father was transferred into Rathinam’s womb, according to Selvi. However, the process had its own risks. “The mother was nearing menopause and had hypertension which made it a challenging task,” Senthamarai Selvi told Express. “Hence she was put on high risk pregnancy care and she delivered successfully,” the doctor added.A few months ago, another case was reported at Palani Balaji Fertility Center, where a 60-year-old woman gave birth to a boy. “More and more parents who have lost children or are infertile are turning towards test tube baby method in Madurai, which is a sign of awareness spreading among them,” the doctor added.
