Despite several initiatives taken by both the district administration and police on strictly following norms to ensure safety of students travelling in vehicles, two schools students, including a special child, died due to the carelessness of drivers in separate incidents here on Tuesday.
Sources said K Mithun (13), the only son of Karunakaran, a staff member at HAPP, was studying level 6 at Arivalayam Special School on the BHEL campus.
Mithun and another classmate used to travel in a private van, along with about 20 students of various schools in and around HAPP. The driver K Senthil (30) of MGR Nagar in Kattur, used to drop the other children at their respective schools and then go to Arivalayam Special school to drop Mithun and his classmate.
Around 8.30 am on Tuesday, Senthil picked up the children from the HAPP area and Mithun from the quarters. After dropping all the students, the driver rushed to Arivalayam to drop the two children. As soon as he entered the school through one entrance, he apparently drove fast to the other entrance, where Mithun was walking. Unfortunately, Senthil did not notice Mithun and ran over him in front of the school. Mithun sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the BHEL hospital, where he succumbed. Boiler Plant police rushed to the spot and sent the body for an autopsy at the Tiruchy Government Hospital. Police also arrested Senthil and remanded him.
In another incident in Thuraiyur, S Kishore (5), son of Suresh, who worked in a TASMAC outlet at Sikkathambu, fell on the road as his school van door did not lock properly. Kishore was studying in kindergarten in Sri Vignesh Vidyalaya in Thuraiyur. On Tuesday, after picking up students, including Kishore from Sikkathambu, the van was proceeding to Ottampatti village.
Suddenly, the vehicle door opened and Kishore, who was seated close to the door, fell on the ground and sustained a head injury.
Passers-by rushed him to the Thuraiyur Government Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries.
Uppiliyapuram police registered a case. Vignesh Vidhyalaya correspondent K Ramaraj (47), the school van driver K Velusamy (38) and helper M Gracy (53) were later arrested in connection with the incident.
Police said that both incidents took place due to the carelessness of the drivers.
