COIMBATORE: The forthcoming State Education Ministers Conference in New Delhi is set to discuss the status of implementation of the landmark Right To Education (RTE) Act among other issues. The conference is being held in the national Capital on June 6 under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.Officials said the quality of teachers’ education and setting up of model degree colleges in 374 higher educationally backward districts in the country (including nearly 30 in Tamil Nadu), would also figure on the agenda of the meet.Earlier in April this year, at a meeting of the State Education Secretaries, 16 States including Tamil Nadu had provided an update on the framing of the Rules for implementation of the RTE Act.“In that meeting Tamil Nadu had said that the State Law Department was perusing the Rules,” the official added.HRD Ministry officials had then pointed out to the Education Secretaries that unless the Rules were notified for implementing the RTE Act, it would not be possible for the Project Approval Board for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to sanction several schemes including new schools to violating States. In this context, the Education Ministers Conference is expected to discuss about getting the Rules in place at the earliest. In addition to this, the National System of Education envisaging an eight year elementary education cycle, comprising five years of primary and three years of upper primary education, will also be discussed.
