KOTTAYAM: The Kottayam municipality will provide land to set up a plastic disposal unit exclusively for the residents of flats and apartments in the town, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said here on Saturday while inaugurating a discussion on waste treatment at source.“The municipality will provide 2 cents of land to set up a plastic waste treatment plant for those residing in flats,” he said after hearing the plight of some flat residents.A vehicle will be arranged to carry the garbage from the flats, he added.The minister also directed District Collector Mini Antony, who was also present for the discussion, to pass a resolution in this regard.It was decided to form units in every ward to implement the programme of treating the waste at source itself starting May 5.Councillors and resident associations will monitor the functioning of these units.Besides, special grama sabhas and municipal councils will be held regularly.The civic body would provide home-based waste management solutions like biogas plant, vermi composting and pipe composting at subsidised rates.Meanwhile, the District Collector lauded Express and some vernacular dailies for addressing the issue with much importance.The discussion was organised jointly by the municipality and the Suchithwa Mission to find ways to mitigate the mounting solid waste menace faced by the town.Suchithwa Mission director Dr Dileep, IG B Sandhya, SP Rajagopal and municipal chairman Sunny Kalloor participated in the discussion
