MYSORE: A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide in front of the Tobacco Auction Platform at Katte Malavadi in Hunsur taluk on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as S Ramegowda (45), a graduate and former member of Gowdenahalli Gram Panchayat. He is survived by wife Sanna Gowramma and two daughters.Ramegowda, who left home informing that he was going to Mysore, committed suicide by hanging himself from an electric pole. Local police have got the details of the debt recorded in a slip, which was kept in S Ramegowda’s pocket.Urging the government to give compensation to the farmer’s family, members of Farmers Association and Tobacco Growers Welfare Society blocked Hunsur-Madikeri Highway more than two hours, which halted the movement of vehicles suddenly.As there was no response from Tobacco Board authorities, angered farmers blocked the highway near Mini Vidhana Soudha, police sources said. They asked the officials to announce Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the farmer.
