BANGALORE: According to Minister for Women and Child welfare C C Patil, dropout rate of girls in schools and female infanticide have registered a sharp decline in Karnataka ever since the Bhagyalakshmi programme for girl children of BPL families was introduced.
"Reports which are yet to tabulated indicate that these two phenomena have come down," the minister said while addressing the media here on Wednesday after chairing a highlevel meeting of the principal secretaries of all departments. The main objective behind launching the Bhagyalakshmi scheme, he said, was to eradicate female foeticide and gender inequality, of which there are signs of achievement.

Informing that there were no dearth of resources to extend the scheme, the minister said that so far over 10.65 lakh beneficiaries have been issued bonds and another two lakhs bonds are yet to be released.

He conceded that some families who are not eligible for the scheme managed to obtain its benefits. "Care will be exercised to select the true beneficiaries henceforth."
