With a miserable test score next to him, ten-year-old Akash sits at his study table, trying to perfect his father’s signature.

The audience clapped and whistled as this scene from the short film, (a+b)2 = ? unfolded at Drisya 2012. The National Campus Short Film festival hosted by Government Engineering College, Barton Hill in association with Kerala University Union was inaugurated at the college on Monday.

“The key to a popular short film at a college festival is to make stuff that students can relate to,” says Revanth P, an engineering student.

The film fest is different this year. “Till last year like most colleges, our film festival meant renting a cinema theatre, Kalabhavan in all likelihood, and playing three commercial flicks from the different languages. Most students bunked it but this year the participation is loud,” says Gopika Nair, a seventh semester engineering student from Barton Hill.

A total of fifteen selected short films (competition) will be screened in the course of two days. Apart from festival films like Kim Ki Duk’s ‘Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring,’ Sanjoy Nag’s ‘Memories in March’ and Carlos Cesar’s ‘Colours of the Mountain’ would also be screened at the same venue.

The fest was inaugurated by ace director Kumar Sahni. The judging panel includes prominent names like Lenin Rajendran.

The newly inaugurated mini auditorium was bursting with students as the movies were screened one after the other.

Most short films were centred around hilarious situations and had a light treatment. Some had socially relevant themes too. ‘Midday 12’ was a movie about climatic change and the rising heat in the city and reactions to it.

‘Caricature’, a film by students of Fatima Mata National college, Kollam pivoted around age-old conflicts of right vs wrong and how money paints it all white.

The film festival will screen award winning films like ‘True Noon’, ‘Colours of the Mountain’ and ‘Motorcycle Diaries’ today.
