RAMANATHAPURAM: Fishermen returned with an exceptionally good catch from sea, but their smiles vanished as the price fixed for their catch at Rameswaram was low on Thursday. The government’s annual 45-day ban on mechanised fishing to promote fish breeding and marine wealth expired on Wednesday. The fishermen considered it a good harvest comparing to last year’s catch after the ban period. It is said each boat netted 150 kg to 300 kg fish, prawns, octopus, crabs and other fish varieties. Prawns were sold at Rs 350 a kg as against the previous year’s Rs 450 to Rs 550. Octopus got a price of Rs 200 to Rs 250 a kg at Rameswaram. Private export companies fixed the price seeing a huge quantity of fish and other marine items on a single day.N J Bose, a fishermen’s association leader, said that the catch was high, but the poor price was a blow to boat-owners.It may be said that a group of fishermen stayed in sea for around two nights and a day and their catch was very high as against that of other fishermen. But the price fixed was disappointing for them.
