Bhubaneswar: Five people, including four of a family, died on Thursday morning after a fire broke out in Bhubaneswar’s Budheswari colony.

Police said the fire broke out around 4am at the second floor house of Satpal Singh, who owns the Pal Heights Hotel in Bhubaneswar.

The residents were asleep when the fire broke out. The deceased have been identified as Satpal’s younger son Gaganpal Singh (40), daugher-in-law Bhavana (38), granddaughter Suhabi Singh (15), grandson Rubi Singh (8) and maid Khusi Das (15). Satpal suffered burn injuries.

Six others members of the family, including Satpal, were rescued by the fire brigade personnel.

Sources said the fire started due to short-circuit in an air-conditioner and soon spread to the rest of the building.

A fire brigade official said they got a call around 5am and two fire tenders were pressed into service. “Five people died due to asphyxiation. We had to break the windows of the first floor to rescue the occupants,” he said.
