BHUBANESWAR: In a major boost to the people suffering from mental illnesses, the State Government on Monday announced free medicines to the patients. The patients admitted to the Psychiatry wings of SCB Medical, Cuttack, VSS Medical, Burla, and MKCG Medical, Berhampur, will be provided free medication. The medicals have been provided funds to the tune of ` 50 lakh each for the purpose, Health Minister Prasanna Acharya said here. The State Government also claimed to have started a drive to free the VSS Medical of encroachments and started work on securing the campus with permanent constructions like gates and boundary walls.  The Orissa High Court has sought information from the Government on the measures taken by it to resolve the main problems of the VSS as freeing it from encroachments, deployment of adequate security, restricting entry of disruptive elements and unifying the campus as demanded by doctors and medicos. Taking a review of the works in progress at a meeting here, the Health Minister said work on the construction of entry gates would commence very soon while security has been strengthened under direct monitoring of the SP. The Government has also sanctioned new posts for meeting the shortage of doctors in different departments. About ` 24.27 lakh has been sanctioned for as many as 18 development projects in the medical. Of them seven have been completed while five are yet to begin, the high-level meeting was informed. The ground floor of the super-speciality block has been completed at a cost of ` 97.26 lakh, burn unit at ` 86.64 lakh, orthopaedics ward at ` 2.55 lakh, 100-bed hostel at ` 2.12 lakh, multi-services centre at ` 45 lakh and library has been completed at a cost of ` 50.56 lakh. The ` 1.14-crore project for construction of the second floor of the super-speciality block is on along with the ENT OT. The Government has sanctioned ` 6.70 crore for development of medicine store and sickle cell anaemia project of which ` 5.57 lakh has been spent, the Minister said.
