Friday Release 'Race 2': Who will win the game?
'Race 2' is important for Bollywood because the first month of 2013 has failed to give any hit film so far.

New Delhi: It was Abbas-Mustan who established the suspense-thriller genre in the Hindi film industry of 1990s. 'Khiladi', 'Baazigar', 'Soldier', 'Ajnabee', 'Race', they have shown a wide range of films on similar themes. Lately they have started to experiment a lot with their colour combination and editing style. 'Naqaab' and 'Players' were apt examples of this, but somehow these films didn't work at the box office.

Though this is an age of sequels but Abbas-Mustan are trying their hands at a franchise for the first time, so it can be viewed as an attempt to come up with a commercially successful film, but at the same time 'Race' had a story which demanded a sequel more than most of the Bollywood sequels.

The film is written by Shiraz Ahmed, one of the people behind the success of 'Race' in 2008. A lot of smartness is expected from him as he will be the man responsible for the placement of characters in 'Race 2'. The film stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel in prominent roles.

Saif Ali Khan is as desperate as Abbas-Mustan to get a hit as his ambitious spy thriller 'Agent Vinod' had failed miserably at the ticket window, however 'Cocktail' helped him in maintaining his market position.

John Abraham could emerge as the surprise package of 'Race 2' as he is playing a grey character in the film. Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline are expected to bring new dimensions to the story, Bipasha Basu will do a cameo.

The thriller that takes the legacy of 'Race' forward claims to be an edge-of-the-seat drama with high octane action, combined with twists that will take audiences on adventure-filled roller-coaster ride.

In part two, Anil Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan reprise their roles as Robert D'Costa and Ranveer Singh respectively from the previous film, while Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel are new additions to the cast.

Jacqueline, who went through a special training to learn a Vietnamese martial arts form for the film, says she has put in a lot for this character and hopes that it becomes her first hit of the year. "It was a very challenging role. Our action-director did not want to use any body double for any of the actors including Saif (Ali Khan or John (Abraham). It prepared us for the challenges ahead because we wanted to live up to the expectations."

She further says, "I went through three months of training to learn the basics of Vietnamese fencing and action choreography. It was extremely intense and I hope it looks good on the screen."

The success of 'Race 2' is important for Bollywood as well because the first month of 2013 has failed to give any hit film so far. The songs of the film are chartbusters, so the makers would be hoping for a good business report. (With inputs from PTI)
