MADURAI: The Madurai High Court Bench on Monday directed the Madurai police to hand over a minor girl to her parents after obtaining an assurance from her parents that they will not marry her off till she completes 18 years of age. The 17-year-old girl, who discontinued her studies from a private college at Madurai, had gone missing on August 25, 2011. The girl stayed at her home, while her parents left for work and on their return they found the girl missing.According to the girl’s parents, their neighbours had stated that their daughter was kidnapped by one Boopathi with the help of his friends. Following this, the parents filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the court. Meanwhile, the additional public prosecutor appearing on behalf of the police stated in the court on Monday that Boopathi was arrested and that he would be produced before the Judicial Magistrate on Monday. The girl was produced before a Bench comprising Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar and Justice P Devadass, to whom she stated that her parents were planning to marry her off against her wishes.The parents meanwhile, jointly gave assurances in the court that they would not marry their daughter off till she completes 18 years of age and that they would not harass their daughter in any manner. The girl also expressed her willingness to go with her parents if they did not force her into marriage.On recording the submissions, the court directed the police to hand over the girl to her parents.The judges, in-order to ascertain if any harassment is meted out to the girl by her parents, directed the girl to be present in court along with her parents on February 6.
