CHENNAI: The key to cracking competitive exams is not based on how many hours you study, or how many books you read, but how well you strategise, said Sylendra Babu, Inspector General of North Zone.Speaking at the launch of a Handbook of Tamil Nadu, aimed at state level and IAS aspirants, he said, “There is no point in reading the wrong books and studying certain subjects intensively. Efficiency and effectiveness is required for civil services.” The Tamil Handbook, launched by the Shankar IAS Academy, is a general knowledge book giving details on the state, covering geography, history, administration, profile of districts and art and culture. These are expected to give a comprehensive coverage of details for attempting competitive exams. The IG also said that there is a gap between parents’ aspirations and their children’s attitude. “Parents want their children to be extreme achievers, but that strong and powerful desire and ambition is not found in the kids,” he said.At the same time, there are numerous students who are unable to reach their full potential. To support the deserving civil service aspirants from economically backward families, Maduari Appu Hotels and Shankar IAS Academy also launched Force-27.The program will choose 27 students a year and provide them with food, accommodation, coaching classes, books and study materials. The selection process will follow the three stages of the UPSC pattern and is open to students who have an annual family income below `1 lakh. Chandrasekar, Chairman of Madurai APPU Hotels launched the program.Project Director IRS and SSS, Chandrayan 1 and 2, Dr Mylswamy Annadurai, said that having a Tamil medium education should not deter anyone from going on to achieve their goals. Addressing the audience in Tamil, he said, “I am able to speak here in my mother tongue and I can converse in English with my counterparts at work. Take your knowledge of the language as a strength, not a weakness.”
