HYDERABAD/VIJAYAWADA: Justice NV Ramana of the AP High Court on Friday reserved orders in a writ petition seeking an independent probe and for charge-sheeting police officers involved in the encounter leading to death of Adapa Venkanna. The judge was hearing a writ petition filed by Adapa Mahalakshmi, widow of the slain person, who alleged that it was a fake encounter and that the entire episode required a proper criminal investigation and that police should be punished.Senior counsel C. Padmanabha Reddy who was called upon to assist the court said that the police complaint itself showed that the victim died due to bullet injuries. He said the theory of self-defence by the police requires to be investigated.Special government pleader Sridhar Reddy contended that it was the victim who first opened fire and thus the police were forced to open fire in self-defence.Adapa Venkanna (40) was killed in an alleged encounter at Pedapulipaka village under Penamaluru police station limits in the early hours of October 5, 2010.Police claimed that when Penamluru SI GV Vinay Mohan and constables were on a patrol duty they confronted Adapa Venkanna. On seeing the police, Venkanna opened fire and police opened fire in retaliation. Venkanna died on the spot. It may be noted that Venkanna was released from Cherlapally jail on bail on September 28.Venkanna was involved in 102 cases including 43 in Vijayawada commissionerate limits, 32 in Guntur district, 16 in East Godavari and five in West Godavari district limits But his wife Mahalakshmi alleged that the police killed her husband in a fake encounter.
