PUDUCHERRY: The local unit of  AIADMK, on Monday, sought a  probe by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)into the death of a 25-year-old man at the Yanam police station recently.Briefing newsmen at a press conference here, Puducherry AIADMK Secretary and MLA A Anbazhagan said that after an inquiry, a sub- inspector and an inspector were suspended in connection with the death of Deva Sakthi Babu who had been brought in for interrogation for a theft case. However, Malladi Krishna Rao, Yanam MLA, held a fast demanding revocation of suspension of the officers. He withdrew his fast finally after the government revoked the suspension  orders. Anbazhagan said that Malladi Krishna Rao had told his supporters that the Lieutenant Governor and  Chief minister Rangasamy would intervene for withdrawing the suspension. In this regard, Anbazhagan asked how could an inquiry by any agency under the government be proper fair if the government was fulfilling the wishes of the MLA who has come out in support of the police officials. Only an impartial inquiry would  bring facts to light and render justice, Anbazhagan added. The AIADMK also sought removal of all MLAs as chairman of public sector undertakings and replacing them by Secretaries to the government (IAS officers) as was the practice in the past. Anbazhagan said that ever since the practice of posting MLAs as chairman came into being some seven to eight years ago, more and more  PSUs were increasingly running into losses. On an average the loss was `3 crore to the government annually and the very purpose of starting the PSUs were defeated, he said, and charged that the MLAs were using their post for political and personal gain.  He alleged that those involved had been using the PSUs to provide backdoor employment to people to do their political work, irrespective of whether the recruitment was required or not. Around 900 people engaged in the past had been retrenched in a PSU. There was no funds to pay the salary to the employees and it had been recommended for closure, Anbazhagan said, and mentioned PASIC ( a PSU which was earlier giving dividend to the government after running profitably). In some PSUs it had been alleged that people were recruited after taking a hefty bribe. To save such organisations, the government was using the tax payers money, pushing people into further economic burden, which he said was unjustified.Further Anbazhagan flayed the government for  ‘utilising’ Rs 200 crore, deposited in Government Provident Fund (GPF), for meeting government expenses. The employees who were saving their income were unable to get money when required or even a loan.  Several employees who applied  have been denied citing financial difficulties, he said.  The financial situation is going from bad to worse and it is doubtful whether the government would be able to pay up the salaries of  employees in January. He questioned how the Chief Secretary was allowing such financial indiscipline. He also criticised the ruling government for taking no action on the owner and driver of the bus involved in an accident where 100 school children were injured and one was killed.  The AIADMK MLA alleged  that due to political reasons the bus operator was allowed to go scot free.
