IAF Quarters: Work to begin soon
The facility will come up at Muttathara, said Air Marshal S P Singh, who stepped down as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, SAC, on Tuesday

It’s ‘home-making’ time in the city for the youngest command of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The Southern Air Command (SAC) will soon begin construction of a married accommodation facility for its personnel at Muttathara. The SAC is facing a space crunch with the number of personnel growing over the years, Air Marshal S P Singh, who stepped down as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, SAC, on Tuesday, said.

‘’Our strength has grown. The married accommodation will come up at Muttathara on land allotted to us,’’ he said. Although the youngest command of the Air Force, the SAC has grown in strategic importance over the years and men and equipment are being added to it on a regular basis.

The State Government has earmarked around 20 acres for the IAF on the land at the Muttathara Sewage Farm. It is here that land has been allotted to the fledgling BSF unit also.

The land for the IAF is in exchange for the plot next to the BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (BATL) at Chakkai now occupied by the Signals Unit. BrahMos requires this plot for its second phase development.

ROAD WOES

The SAC has repeatedly requested the Government to get the roads leading to its HQ at Akkulam repaired. The narrow road is in a shambles and the edges have collapsed in many places. Air Marshal Singh said that the issue had been taken up with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy as well as Shashi Tharoor MP. ‘’They were extremely positive about the issue,’’ Singh said.
