Hyderabad: Perturbed with the nonchalant attitude of youngsters towards Independence Day, a worker of the Congress party in Hyderabad ordered the tailoring of a huge 111-foot-long Tricolour, which he unfurled on Tuesday in Hyderabad.
Setting an example by showcasing his love and deep respect for the national flag, K Prabhakar Reddy hit upon this idea of celebrating the 60th Independence Day with a huge Tricolour.
He said that there was a need to reawaken feelings of patriotism in Generation Next.
"I want to revive patriotism among all countrymen, especially the youth. They celebrate Teacher's Day, Valentine's Day, but they don't remember Independence Day. I have made such a big flag so that people come and see it and get inspired for patriotism," Reddy said.
In his earlier attempts, Reddy had been making similar attempts with 20-metre long national flags to cheer India in World Cup matches.
The latest endeavour has cost Reddy a total of Rs 5,500 (Rs 5,000 for the cloth and an additional Rs 500 as tailoring charges).
"It will be ready by tomorrow. I really feel good to sew such a big flag," said Rajeshwar, the tailor on Monday.
It was in 2002 that the right to unfurl the Tricolour was given to general public along with certain guidelines, preventing any form of dishonour by anyone.
Before 2002, the people were not allowed to fly the national flag in public except on designated national holidays. Only government offices and higher functionaries of the government had the privilege to do so.
It could be possible for the common man only after the Cabinet committee of the Central Government amended the Indian flag code allowing general public to hoist the flag on all days of the year, provided they safeguarded the dignity, honour and respect of the flag.
