TIRUCHY: With Vijayakant’s DMDK not entering the contest for the Tiruchy (West) by-elections, it will be a straight contest between the ruling AIADMK and its arch rival, the DMK.The district leadership of the DMDK was waiting for a direction from the high command till the last minute, as the media was keeping a watch at the election office from the morning for the party candidate to turn up for filing nomination papers. With nothing of that sort happening, it became clear that the only party which was taking on the AIADMK was the DMK alone. After the initial reluctance, the DMK belatedly decided to field ex-minister KN Nehru, as it became clear that the DMDK would be pushed out of the AIADMK front. The calculation of the DMK leadership had proved right as the DMDK was no more an ally of the AIADMK.The Left parties breaking away from the AIADMK alliance was an added bonus to the DMK, which could hope to give a tough fight to the ruling party, which had pitted former MLA Paranjothi in the seat. The AIADMK with the support of the DMDK and Left parties, won by a margin of 7,000 votes during the 2011 elections. The DMDK polled over 14,000 votes on its own when it contested alone in 2006 Assembly elections in Tiruchy II, from which Tiruchy West was carved out and the Communist parties too have a presence in the constituency.
