The journalist, Sudip Dutta Bhowmick, was working with a Bengali newspaper and was in Agartala to cover a news development. The accused, Nandu Riyang, is said to have shot at Bhowmick from point-blank range.

New Delhi: A journalist was shot dead on Tuesday allegedly by a jawan of the 2nd Battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) following an altercation between the two in Tripura's RK Nagar. The incident occurred near the headquarters of the TSR.

The journalist, Sudip Datta Bhaumick, was working with a Bengali newspaper and was in Agartala to cover a news development. The accused, Nandu Riyang, is said to have shot at Bhaumick from point-blank range. He was later arrested.

Speaking to News18 over the telephone from Tripura, News Editor of Syandan Patrika, Animesh Dutta, said, “In the morning, the TSR Commandant Tapan Debbarma called up Sudip and asked him to meet him at his office. My colleague Sudip went to his office and after the meeting when he came out, the PSO of Commandant asked him if he had any knowledge of a document which was there on Commandant’s table. Sudip told the PSO that he is not aware of any such document. At that time the Commandant was in the toilet. Both Sudip and the PSO had a heated argument and suddenly the PSO fired at him with his service rifle.”

He said, “Soon after the gunshot, the Commandant and other jawans rushed to the spot and found him in a pool of blood. He was immediately rushed to a nearby nursing home where he was declared dead. The jawan was arrested by the local police. We suspect that it was a pre-planned murder and we have demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter.”

About missing documents, Dutta said, “We have no idea what documents the PSO was enquiring about. My colleague Sudip felt humiliated when the PSO wanted to search his pockets. It is a murder and we want a stern action against the accused.”

Dibyendu Shekhar Dutta, Information Officer to Tripura CM, said, “The matter is under investigation. We have asked for a report for further course of action/comment.”

Superintendent of Police, Abhijit Saptarshi, is personally monitoring the case and has been asked to submit a report at the earliest.

"Tapan Debbarma, the bodyguard of the TSR's Second Battalion Commandant, opened fire killing Sudip Datta Bhaumik on the spot," a police officer said.

The body of Mr Bhaumik, a reporter of "Syandan Patrika" and local television channel "Venguard", was brought to Gobinda Ballav Panth Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.

The incident came to pass, barely two months after another journalist, Santanu Bhowmick, was hacked to death.
