Indoor sub-station at Peyad soon
Indoor sub-station at Peyad soon

After Karamana, Peyad in the district too is set to sport an indoor electrical sub-station. If things go as planned, the 33 kV sub-station will be commissioned in two months, making it the second such indoor facility in the State.

The new sub-station will benefit around 20,000 people in Peyad and its immediate neighbourhoods.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had announced plans for more indoor sub-stations after facing problems in finding land, especially in the urban areas.

‘’In an indoor sub-station, all the equipment, including the transformers and controls, will be indoors. A 33 kV sub-station is ideal for this purpose as they are compact and serve a small area around them,’’ Chief Engineer (Transmission-South) N M Babukuttan said. ‘’In the rural areas, we don’t face problems in finding land, unlike in the towns,’’ he said.

Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed had inaugurated the 33 kV sub-station at Karamana on June 14 this year, making it the KSEB’s first indoor sub-station. It is functioning smoothly, KSEB officials said. The sub-station was opened to address voltage problems, transmission loss and the increasing demand for electricity in Valiyasala, Karamana, Kalady, Chalai, Manacaud, Kuriathy, Nedungad and Poojappura areas.

The KSEB also plans to commission a 66 kV sub-station at Balaramapuram within three months and another 33 kV station at Kadakkavur. They, however, will be conventional stations, situated on open ground, KSEB officials said.
