CUTTACK: Investigating into a chain snatching case, Commissionerate Police have stumbled upon a gang of motorcycle-lifters with operations spread across several districts in the State. Four including the kingpin of the gang along with a buyer of a stolen motorcycle were arrested by Purighat police on Friday. Two motorcycles have been recovered from them. According to police, on June 11, a complaint was lodged by one Pravati Mishra, wife of Dr BS Mishra of Hazari Lane, alleging snatching of her ancestral gold chain weighing around 23 gm. Two youths had snatched the chain while she was walking down the lane towards her home in the evening, she had stated. Police had closed in on one Dipuni alias Ashish Ballav Das (22) of Gopaljew Lane in the connection. He admitted to have committed the crime along with an associate. The chain was recovered but two grams had been cut off from it by his associate to take it for checking purity as well as negotiating with prospective buyers. The associate is still at large. On further probing, Dipuni reportedly confessed to be involved in a larger motorcycle-lifting racket spanning several districts. He led the police to other gang members Budha alias Bijay Singh of Choudwar, who stayed at Bangalisahi, Pintu alias Sukanta Sahoo of Khan Nagar and Pabitra alias Manoj Nayak of Athgarh. Their areas of operation spread across districts of Kandhamal, Berhampur, Ganjam and even Bhubaneswar, police said. The two motorcycles recovered from them have been tagged to recent thefts under Purighat police station. One motorcycle was stolen on May 22 in front of Nokia Care at Dolmundai while the other had been stolen on May 28 from Pithapur area. One of the motorcycles was allegedly sold to one Chandrakanta Nayak of Nuapatna in Dhenkanal district, who also used to stay at Banagali Sahi area. The gang used to not only change the number but also the entire colour of the bikes before disposing them of, police said.
