New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Wednesday made the first arrest in the bombing of an Israeli embassy car in the capital earlier last month. The police arrested a freelance journalist, accusing him of being part of the conspiracy. The arrest comes just over three weeks after the dramatic bombing of the Israeli embassy car that critically injured a diplomat and two others near the Prime Minister's residence.
The freelance journalist was reportedly working with government broadcaster Doordarshan and Radio Tehran. The Delhi Police have accused him of being a part of the conspiracy.
The 50-year-old, identified as Syed Mohammad Kazmi, was picked up on Tuesday night by a special Delhi Police team.
Kazmi is the first person to be arrested in the February 13 blast. He has been sent to 20 days of police custody.
The blast had ramifications in three sovereign nations.
Although no officer spoke on record, sources told CNN-IBN that a scooty left behind by those who executed the attack was seized from Qazmi's residence. The suspect even travelled as part of a delegation to Syria post the attack.
Besides stating that Qazmi worked for Radio Tehran, the police made no comment on possible role of Iran in the attack, as repeatedly alleged by Israel, nor elaborated on the details of his involvement.
Qazmi's family, however, said his travels to Iran were the only reason for him being branded a suspect. Qazmi's nephew said, "He is innocent. He is a journalist. He has been made a scapegoat."
The Delhi Police has booked the suspect has under the new anti-terror law UAPA.
