Israeli car attack: CPI condemns journalist's arrest
AB Bardhan said that the journalist dealt with Palestine and Israel issue, what's the harm in it.

New Delhi: Arrest of a scribe in connection with the bombing of an Israeli diplomat's vehicle was condemned on Friday by CPI which alleged that there was no basis for Delhi Police to book him under such serious charges and the move was to please Israel only.

Questioning the manner in which Syed Mohammed Ahmed Kazmi was arrested, CPI General Secretary AB Bardhan said, "Government has made the arrest without proper probe. This journalist dealt with Palestine and Israel issue, what's the harm in it. It's an attempt by government to please Israel."

Condemning the arrest, CPI Secretary Atul Kumar Anjaan said Kazmi was a respected journalist.

"Kazmi was a Press Information Bureau (PIB) accredited journalist with a career spanning 25 years. Government checks the background of a journalist before giving PIB accreditation," Anjaan said.

Questioning the evidence against Kazmi, Anjaan said being a journalist covering middle east, it's not wrong to have content related to that area which may or may not be against any particular country.

"He worked for an Iranian media organisation and ran a news agency. A journalist deals with various kinds of information. His laptop may have had content related to Palestine and Israel but that is not against Indian laws", he said.

"You don't break any law by having pro Palestine or anti-Israel content in laptops or books. There are many people in India who support Palestine, it doesn't make them wrong under Indian laws", he added.

Kazmi was arrested on March 7 from his Jor Bagh residence by Delhi police in connection with the bombing of an Israeli diplomat's car. Claiming that the February 13 bombing in the heart of the Capital was a case of "international terrorism", Delhi Police said 50-year-old Syed Mohammed Kazmi is alleged to have helped the bomber conduct reconnaissance of the Israeli embassy.
