New Delhi: Making it evident that it wanted Natwar Singh to quit, members of the Congress party on Monday said his termination from the party's Steering Committee was "clear message which he should understand".
Senior party leader and Union Minister Kapil Sibal said, "The very fact that Natwar Singh has been booted from the highest body of the Congress is a clear message in itself. He should understand that it's high-time he resigns."
Describing Natwar Singh as a very mature, experienced and very thoughtful politician, Sibal said, "Natwar will understand the circumstances under which the decision was taken."
"I am sure that in the light of the decision he will take appropriate steps which he considers best in the interest of the party," he added.
However, Sibal said the party's decision did not mean that Natwar Singh is guilty.
"His innocence or guilt will be established once the inquiry ordered by the government is complete," he stated.
Congress General Secretary Ambika Soni said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had endorsed the Steering Committee's decision.
"It is for the Prime Minister to decide on whether Natwar Singh should continue in his Cabinet or not," she added.
