KOCHI: Ganja, homosexuality, ragging and rape are not new in Ernakulam district jail and the four other sub-jails in the district. “The inmates manage to get ganja when they are taken out for trial. Agents and colleagues of the prisoners hand over the drug at crowded places or in toilets,” an official said on conditions of anonymity. The inmates hide these substances in their rectum, he said. “We do not have the permission to check inmates who return after being produced in courts. And, during checks in prison cell, they hide such substances in their body,” he said. City Express had reported about how ganja was being brought to the jails through inmates who are taken out to be produced before courts. Ragging and homosexuality are also very much prevalent in all the jails. “Newcomers are protected from such atrocities by keeping them in safer cells that are far away from those where hardcore criminals and thugs are kept. But, during work time or at the canteens, the newcomers are ragged. Some force the new inmate to engage in homosexuality as well. We often fail to take action because no complaints are registered in this regard,” a jail official said and added that fights were also common among the inmates.
