Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir will get back an elected government on Sunday after 49 days when PDP leader Mufti Mohamemd Sayeed is sworn in as Chief Minister in alliance with BJP which will be in power in the state for the first time.
Sayeed, 79, will be administered oath of office by Governor NN Vohra in Jammu at a function which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers including Home Minister Rajnath Singh and senior BJP leaders Amit Shah, LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi among others.
Sayeed met Vohra here this afternoon, after which a Raj Bhavan spokesman said the Governor nvited Sayeed to form the government, a day after the PDP leader was elected leader of his party's legislature party.
"The Governor's invitation to Sayeed follows BJP-PDP combine staking the claim for formation of government in the state under the leadership of Sayeed", the spokesman said. Sayeed's swearing in as the 12th Chief Miniter at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium of Jammu University at 11 AM will bring to an end to 49 days of Governor's rule imposed on the state since the resignation of Omar Abdullah as chief minister after being voted out of power last December.
It will also mark Sayeed's return to the top post after nearly a decade since having led a PDP-Congress coalition government for three years from January 2002. The strength of the PDP-BJP alliance government, which has been termed as a meeting of "North Pole and South Pole" by Sayeed, is expected to be 25--with 12 PDP MLAs and an equal number drawn from BJP including Nirmal Singh who is tipped to be Deputy Chief Minister.
Separatist-turned politician and leader of People's Conference Sajjad Lone is also likely to be part of the coalition government.
